GEOGRAPHY OF THE PANCHAYAT

Thakazhi Grama Panchayat is located in Kuttanad region and Alappuzha district of the state of Kerala. This area is also known as the birthplace of the famous writer Thakazhi Sivashankara Pillai.Geography As it is a part of Kuttanad, areas below sea level are widespread here. The area is characterized by vast paddy fields, wetlands and backwater networks. Since it is a water-rich area, agriculture and fishing are the main sources of livelihood. Water resources The tributaries of the Pampa River and various streams enrich the area with water. Several canals, which are part of the water transport system of Kuttanad, pass through the panchayat.It is one of the areas most prone to flooding during the rainy season. Climate The climate is tropical monsoon. The southwest monsoon from June to September and the northeast monsoon from October–November are the main rainy seasons. Relatively high humidity prevails throughout the year. Soil characteristics Alluvial soil and clay are prevalent.The soil is fertile and suitable for paddy cultivation. The soil is rich in organic matter, which makes it ideal for agricultural production. Economic Importance Takazhi is one of the major agricultural panchayats in Kuttanad, known as the "breadbasket" of Kerala.Paddy cultivation, fish farming and duck rearing are the mainstays of the rural economy.
